Masks

Józef Krzysztof Oraczewski

Solo Exhibition

Presented in Venice during the period of the 2024 Biennale, Mask by Józef Krzysztof Oraczewski entered into a conceptual dialogue with the Biennale’s overarching theme, Foreigners Everywhere. Rather than addressing foreignness as a geopolitical condition, the exhibition approached it as an ontological state — a structural dimension of subjectivity.

In Oraczewski’s work, the mask is neither decorative nor folkloric. It functions as a mediating structure between the individual and the social sphere. The mask protects, but it also isolates. It enables participation while simultaneously marking distance. It becomes a site of tension between authenticity and performance.

Situated in Venice — a city historically shaped by exchange, spectacle, and layered identities — the exhibition acquired additional resonance. The mask, long embedded in Venetian cultural history, was reinterpreted as a contemporary metaphor for constructed identity and negotiated belonging.

Mask forms part of the broader Carnival Biennale Mask program developed by ORAC Gallery, investigating the dynamics of identity, freedom, and artistic autonomy within collective systems.
