Venice Whispers
Józef Krzysztof Oraczewski
Solo Exhibition
Venice Whispers was an individual exhibition by Józef Krzysztof Oraczewski presented at A Space Castello during the opening period of the Venice Biennale. Developed as a site-specific project, the exhibition engaged Venice not as an image or historical emblem, but as a living, resonant presence — layered, fragile and continuously negotiated between visibility and erasure. In the context of the Biennale’s overarching theme Foreigners Everywhere, the exhibition proposed a subtle shift of perspective: rather than speaking about Venice, it sought to listen to it.
The title carries a deliberate ambiguity. Venice Whispers suggests both the murmurs emanating from the city and Venice itself as a whispering subject. This dual meaning reflects the curatorial intention to acknowledge the city’s agency — its rhythms, silences and accumulated memories — instead of imposing external narratives upon it. In a city often overwhelmed by projection, spectacle and consumption, restraint became an ethical and aesthetic position.
Oraczewski’s paintings did not depict Venice directly. Instead, they functioned as resonant surfaces — spaces of suspension where landscape, memory and inner experience converge. The works echoed the city’s material and temporal conditions: water-bound instability, muted light, and porous boundaries between presence and disappearance. Painting became a medium of attention and listening, attuned to what persists beneath the visible surface.
Presented during the opening of the Venice Biennale, Venice Whispers articulated ORAC Gallery’s curatorial position within the international context — grounded in respect for place, continuity and sustained engagement rather than episodic visibility. The exhibition framed the Biennale not as a platform for assertion, but as an opportunity for dialogue, privileging sensitivity over declaration and presence over spectacle.
Venice Whispers formed part of ORAC Gallery’s long-term relationship with Venice, establishing a foundation for future projects that understand art as a practice of attention — to places, to histories and to the subtle forms of meaning that emerge when one chooses to listen.
