Pearl
Chantia Malaja
Solo Exhibition
Pearl is a solo exhibition by Chantia Malaja presented at A Space Castello in Venice during the Venice Biennale as part of the Carnival Biennale Mask project. The exhibition engaged with the rich symbolic history of the pearl, using it as a metaphor for transformation, resilience and the embrace of the unfamiliar within a continually shifting cultural landscape.
In this series, Malaja employs the pearl as both motif and conceptual anchor — exploring the idea that beauty is born from processes of friction, discomfort and integration. Drawing upon the pearl’s dual nature — as object of desire and product of resistance — the works invite viewers to consider how identity, experience and meaning emerge through encounters with difference and challenge.
Rather than presenting ornamental surfaces, the exhibition cultivated a reflective space in which the pearl becomes an emblem of psychological and cultural transformation. Through a layered interplay of form, texture and metaphor, Pearl framed each work as a site of encounter — a place where the unfamiliar is not othered, but acknowledged as generative.
Presented in the heart of Venice, Pearl resonated with the city’s own narratives of change, stratified histories and fluid identities. The exhibition offered a contemplative counterpoint to the wider discourse of the Venice Biennale, proposing that art’s radical potential lies not only in confrontation, but in openness, receptivity and the capacity to transform through dialogue.
