Matter of Care

Chantia Malaja

Solo Exhibition

Matter of Care is an exhibition that examines the concept of "home" not as a static form, but as a dynamic, ongoing process. In this new body of work, Chantia Malaja reflects on how space becomes home through the mechanisms of care, repetition, and the gradual enclosing of that which is fragile and difficult to define. The exhibition, presented within the broader Homanity project, builds upon the artist's ongoing inquiry into the intimate, invisible forces that shape our sense of belonging and connection.

The works in Matter of Care consist of vertical, semi-transparent panels, each containing fragments of milky, slightly scorched foam. This material, while seemingly soft and amorphous, functions not as a rigid structure, but as a filling — a metaphor for the invisible yet essential aspects of home: warmth, protection, and intention. The foam symbolizes the layered complexity of care, which is not always immediately visible but is deeply embedded within the spaces we inhabit.

In a continuation of the artist's previous project Pearl, which explored the slow, often painful processes of layering and enclosing the incomprehensible core of our existence, Matter of Care expands this logic into the realm of space and human relations. The exhibition presents a meditation on the relationships we cultivate through care, illustrating how home emerges from the fragments of the world we choose to gather and carry with us.

The exhibition positions care as a fundamental human gesture, highlighting its quiet yet powerful role in the construction of spaces that sustain us. Through her work, Malaja invites viewers to reflect on the delicate balance between fragility and resilience, between the visible and the unseen, and on how care — in its most expansive sense — becomes the foundation upon which we build our sense of place.
